Ex-Cherryville police chief faces embezzle charge

Posted June 25th, 2013 @ 6:10am

CHERRYVILLE, N.C (AP) _ The former police chief of the mostly rural North Carolina town of Cherryville is heading to court to face a criminal charge that he took the town's money and property.
Woody Burgess is scheduled to enter a plea at a hearing Tuesday.
Federal prosecutors allege he embezzled more than $11,000 by telling the town's finance director to issue checks to buy firearms from a sporting goods store for his personal use.
FBI agents last October began a roundup that included three Cherryville officers and a Gaston County sheriff's deputy. They were accused of providing protection to trucks carrying stolen goods and cash.
The Charlotte Observer reports all have pleaded guilty. Burgess was suspended and later retired.
