NC Senate prepared to vote on latest tax proposal

Posted July 2nd, 2013 @ 6:26am

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ The North Carolina House isn't formally working this week, but that's not keeping the Senate from moving what Republican leaders there call a compromise plan on a tax overhaul.
The Senate prepared Tuesday to debate and vote on a package to create one flat personal income tax rate, eliminate the corporate income tax over five years and add more transactions to those subject to sales taxes.
The House and Senate have been working on competing tax plans and have negotiated intensely for a couple of weeks without a breakthrough. Senate leader Phil Berger says the new proposal takes the House position in several areas.
The Senate should finish voting Wednesday then send the package to the House, which isn't taking up legislation until next week.
