Lights-Out Snowstorm Brings More Than 200,000 Power Outages To NC

GREENSBORO, NC (WFMY) - A record snow day in the Piedmont Triad brought its fair share of problems, with widespread power outages being one of the most prominent.

Duke Energy anticipated more than 500,000 outages in light of the storm as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued a State of Emergency last week. Sunday night, the state tweeted there were more than 200,000 outages.

That number has since gone down dramatically, but power problems persist in the central and western parts of the state after the storm. There was still more than 30,000 without power in the Piedmont Triad area Monday morning.

Here are the power outage totals for local counties from the state department of public safety as of 6:45 a.m. Monday -

  • Guilford: 9,089
  • Forsyth: 2,865
  • Rockingham: 3,560
  • Randolph: 4,555
  • Alamance: 2,645
  • Stokes: 3,042
  • Surry: 2,385
  • Davidson: 297
  • Wilkes: 3,034
  • Chatham: 3,214

Greensboro measured 12 inches of snow Sunday while Winston-Salem piled up 14.5 inches and Boone got a whopping 18!

Jeff Brooks with Duke Energy said wind helped reduce and increase the outages they were dealing with.
