Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Crosses 1 Billion Views On YouTube

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” just hit a major milestone!

This week, the band’s critically-acclaimed smash single garnered its one billionth view on Christmas (December 25). Additionally, the video for the song, which was uploaded to YouTube on June 16, 2009, has received 5.8 million likes on the video-streaming platform.

Bassist Krist Novoselic, who co-founded the rock band in 1987, was one of the first to celebrate the massive landmark on social media, tweeting, “Thanks to you all!!!!” When the iconic record was projected to reach 1 billion YouTube views a week ago, Novoselic commemorated that the one-billionth view would be in honor of the group’s late frontman Kurt Cobain.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is not only the group’s most popular hit ever, it’s indisputably considered the greatest song of all-time — and there’s some science to back that up as well. As the lead single of Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind, the track went on to earn the group two MTV Video Music Awards for Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video in 1992.

According to the band’s YouTube views stats, the song is only trailed by “Come As You Are” (334 million), “The Man Who Sold The World (MTV Unplugged)” (281 million), and “Heart-Shaped Box” (174 million).
