Johnny Depp Is Producing A Very Interesting Michael Jackson Musical

Johnny Depp is producing a musical about Michael Jackson. If that sentence isn't weird enough on its own, here's the kicker: the story's told from the perspective of the King of Pop's iconic glove.

As Page Six reports, the show is titled “For the Love of a Glove: An Unauthorized Musical Fable About the Life of Michael Jackson, as told by his Glove” and is set to premiere in Los Angeles on January 25. It's described as a “look into the strange forces that shaped Michael and the scandals that bedeviled his reputation,” narrated by a talking, singing glove.

The production's writer Julien Nitzberg first came up with the concept 17 years ago. “I’m known for writing a lot of biopics,” he explained to Page Six. “A major TV network wanted me to write a [Jackson] movie … but the question came up [about] how to deal with the child-abuse allegations.” When the network and Nitzberg disagreed, “I said, how’s this? Everything MJ has been accused of has actually been caused by his glove, which is actually an alien from outer space [and] feeds on virgin boy blood. They laughed and said, can you do the normal version?”

“It was morally kind of repugnant to me to do … I turned down a really big paycheck,” he confessed. “[But I thought] I’m going to go back to this … and do this as a musical...we just couldn’t get the financing.”

Nitzberg has worked with Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil in the past, and the partnership became the perfect fit.

Though the musical is unauthorized, there is an official MJ biopic in the works that's been approved by the Jackson estate.

As The Hollywood Reporter explains, "the film will cover his entire life and career, which includes his beginnings with The Jackson Five, a rise to pop superstardom and, later in life, legal struggles with both civil and criminal lawsuits stemming from allegations of child sex abuse. Jackson died in 2009 at age 50."
